Why You’ll Love this Smoothie

  • Easy to make: Like any other smoothie, it’s easy to make them. Gather and prepare all ingredients, add them to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Healthy: This apple banana spinach smoothie is packed with nutrients and has lots of fiber and antioxidants. There is no added sugar, and it’s dairy-free. Also, it will keep you full.
  • Tasty: This smoothie perfectly balances tart and sweet without adding artificial sugar.

Ingredients

Sour apple smoothie ingredients.
  • Sour apple: We need one granny smith apple. This apple will give the smoothie an acidic and tart taste, but with other ingredients, it will balance out. It’s packed with nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants.
  • Pineapple: For this recipe, we are using frozen pineapple chunks. I like combining fresh and frozen fruit because it will create a smoothie’s perfect texture and consistency. Also, it’s much easier to have frozen fruit on hand year-round.
  • Spinach: Just a handful of fresh spinach leaves is an excellent addition to this smoothie.
  • Banana: One small banana will add sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie.
  • Avocado: Half an avocado will give the perfect creamy texture. Otherwise, the smoothie might have more like an “apple sauce” consistency.
  • Lemon juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice will blend in perfectly with all other ingredients. I recommend using fresh lemon juice, not the store bottle version.
  • Oat milk: I used regular oat milk. If you prefer a thicker smoothie, add milk gradually until you have the perfect smoothie consistency.
  • Spices: I used a pinch of ground cinnamon. It will go great with apple and other ingredients.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Make a smoothie bowl: If you prefer to have a smoothie bowl, add less liquid to create a thicker consistency.
  • Add your favorite toppings: Add fresh fruit and other toppings per your preferences.
  • Use different greens: If you don’t have fresh spinach, use kale instead. Arugula is another excellent option, although it will give a peppery kick to a smoothie flavor.
  • Adding healthy fats: Chia seeds or flaxseed are great add-ins when you want to add some of the best superfoods.
  • Add ginger: If you want to add a little bit of a spicy kick to this green smoothie, add a small piece of fresh ginger. Ginger is great for the gastrointestinal system and helps with digestion.
  • Adjust tartness: Add more fresh lemon juice if you prefer your smoothie more tart.
  • Add protein: Add one to two scoops of protein powder for after-workout muscle recovery.
  • Use different liquids: I used oat milk, but if you prefer other dairy or non-dairy options, feel free to use any of your preferences.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Use a high-power blender: To easily blend this smoothie and avoid the “apple sauce” texture, I recommend using the high-power blender. I used my Nutri Bullet, and it was perfect!
  • Use a mix of fresh and frozen fruit: To avoid adding ice to your smoothie, which will only water it down and change the flavor, use a blend of fresh and frozen fruit.
  • Add liquid gradually: If you prefer a thicker smoothie, add oat milk a couple of tablespoons at a time.
  • Layer the ingredients properly: When adding the ingredients to a blender, ensure the frozen ingredients are on the opposite side of the blades. This will ensure the blender won’t have any issues while trying to break down those frozen pieces.

Green Apple Smoothie Benefits

There are many benefits of drinking a green apple smoothie. Here are some of them:

  • Nutritious: Green apples are packed with nutrients and vitamins. They also contain antioxidants and are a good source of fiber.
  • Helping with digestion: Green apples promote the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut.

Please refer to this article from WebMD to learn more about the benefits of green apples. Also, in the article from Healthline, you can read more about the benefits of apples in general.

How to Serve

Serve this apple banana smoothie in a glass or a bowl. Please note that you will need less liquid to have a thicker consistency for a smoothie bowl.

Recipe FAQs

Do you have to peel apples for a smoothie?

If you don’t have a high-powered blender, I recommend peeling them. The smoothie texture might differ otherwise. Also, there is extra fiber in an apple’s peel, so you might also consider that.

Can you put raw spinach in a smoothie?

Yes, absolutely. Considering the amount of spinach we use in this smoothie, you can’t taste it.

Can I use different apples?

Use Pink Lady apples instead if you don’t have Granny Smith apples.

Can I use kale instead of spinach?

Yes, use any greens you prefer for this smoothie.

My smoothie is too thick/too thin. How to fix it?

If your smoothie is too thick, use more liquid. If your smoothie is too thin, adding a little bit of extra frozen fruit or more avocado can help add thickness to the smoothie.

How to store this smoothie?

This smoothie is best enjoyed when fresh.

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into a glass or a bowl and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • If you use a smaller blender, like Nutribullet, as I am, you probably won’t be able to add all ingredients at once. Instead, add half the ingredients first, blend it, then add the other half (while keeping the first half of the ingredients in the blender). You want to ensure that all ingredients combine well together.
