Why You’ll Love This Mocktail

  • Easy to Make: This mocktail is so easy to make. It requires only a few ingredients and a few simple steps. You don’t need special equipment since the drink is assembled in a glass.
  • Flavor: This blackberry mocktail will amaze your taste buds! It’s so refreshing, with the perfect balance of sweetness from blackberries, a slight sourness from lemon juice, and bitterness from tonic water.
  • Customizable: It’s easy to customize this mocktail from different syrup flavors to tonic water or other less sweet options.

Ingredients

Blackberry mocktail ingredients.
  • Blackberries: For this recipe, I used fresh blackberries. With the juicy, sweet, slightly tart flavor notes, they are one of my favorite fruits. Feel free to use frozen if you don’t have fresh blackberries on hand. Read the following article to learn more about the health benefits of blackberries.
  • Brown sugar: You can use any sugar, but I like light brown sugar. This sugar will be less sweet than white granulated sugar. The syrup will be slightly darker when prepared with brown sugar.
  • Water: I used equal parts of water as sugar. To make more decadent syrup, use less water than sugar.
  • Lemon juice: I recommend using fresh lemon juice for the best flavor.
  • Light tonic water: I recommend Fever-Tree light tonic water. It’s my absolute favorite. This tonic water will have less sugar than regular tonic water, and it’s less bitter. This tonic water will give this mocktail the perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness.

See the recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Make it less sweet: To make it less sweet, use club soda, sparkling water, or seltzer.
  • Make a cocktail: Add a shot of vodka or gin for all the cocktail lovers.
  • Make it spicy: To add a spicy kick, use ginger beer. It will be a refreshing, spicy version of this delicious mocktail.
  • Use different syrup: If you don’t have blackberries or prefer a different flavor, use raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries.
  • Adjust the ratio: You can adjust the blackberry syrup, lemon juice, and tonic water ratio.
  • Add different garnish: You can use fresh thyme, rosemary, mint, or sage. Also, add a fresh blackberry or lemon peel to add flavor.

Which Glasses to Use

I used the double old-fashioned glass. Another great option is the balloon glass for a beautiful presentation.

How to Make Blackberry Simple Syrup

  1. Add water, sugar, and blackberries to a medium-sized pan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the pan from heat and let it cool for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Strain into a measuring bowl using a spoon and a mesh strainer.
  5. Pour the syrup into a glass jar and store it in a fridge for up to two weeks. Seal the jar once the syrup is completely cool.

How to Make Blackberry Mocktail

Step 1: Prepare the blackberry simple syrup and let it cool down before using. Also, place the glass in a freezer for 10-15 minutes, which will keep the drink cold longer.

Step 5: Add garnish and serve immediately!

Pro Tip: For a beautiful presentation, slowly pour tonic water so as not to disturb the blackberry syrup layer and to avoid spill-ups due to carbonation in tonic water.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Prepare the blackberry simple syrup in advance: To speed up the preparation time, prepare the syrup in advance. The syrup can be stored for two weeks, so it’s great to have it on hand for lattes, mocktails, and cocktails.
  • Chill the glass: To keep the mocktail cold longer, chill the glass in a freezer before pouring the drink.
  • Use a large ice cube: Another way to keep the drink cold longer is to use a large ice cube. Another benefit is that the drink can sit longer without being watered down.
  • Use fresh lemon juice: I recommend using fresh lemon juice since the mocktail has only three ingredients, so quality is critical.
  • Slowly pour the tonic water: To avoid spills, slowly pour the tonic water. It will fizz up at the top if you pour it too quickly. Pour the tonic water using a long bar spoon to preserve the bubbles.
  • Mix the drink before drinking: I recommend mixing the mocktail with a straw or a spoon. Otherwise, the syrup will stay at the bottom of the glass.
