With just three ingredients and a few simple steps, you will have a classic Moscow Mule recipe. This cocktail is perfect for those hot summer nights, but it’s also great during the holiday season, thanks to the strong ginger flavor.

For other mule variations, try this London mule, raspberry mule, rum mule, or apple cider mule.

Looking to expand your collection of refreshing and fruity cocktails? Consider trying out the Empress gin cocktail, the traditional gin and tonic, or the Kiwi gin cocktail.

Ingredients

With just a few ingredients, it’s essential to use good quality ingredients. If you are not sure which vodka or ginger beer you prefer, I suggest doing some taste-testing.

Here’s what you’ll need to make a classic Moscow Mule cocktail:

  • Ginger Beer: We all have a different preference about which ginger beer tastes the best, so I would go with your favorite. After a few taste-tasting, my favorite is Reed’s Premium Ginger Brew (Jamaican style). I like this one because it has a perfect combination of sweetness and spiciness.
  • Vodka: As I mentioned before, it’s essential to use good quality vodka and avoid the cheapest bottle in the store. My recommendation is Tito’s vodka.
  • Freshly-Squeezed Lime Juice: I always use freshly-squeezed lime juice. It just tastes so much better than the bottled lime juice.

This recipe calls for lots of ice. I use regular ice cubes. Also, you can add garnishes, like lime wedges and/or a spring of fresh mint.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

For exact measurements, take a look at the recipe card.

Step 1: Chill the copper mug in a freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Fill the mug halfway with the ice cubes.

Step 3: Add lime juice and vodka.

Step 4: Top off with ginger beer and stir.

Voila! You have the easiest yet so delicious cocktail. You can add garnish – lime wedge and/or spring of mint if you prefer.

Substitution and Variations

There are numerous variations of Moscow Mules, including classic variations where vodka is substituted with a different type of liquor.

  • Mexican Mule: swap vodka for tequila.
  • Kentucky Mule: swap vodka for bourbon.
  • Dark & Stormy: swap vodka for dark rum.
  • Gin Gin Mule (London Mule): swap vodka for gin.

FAQ

What kind of glass is a Moscow mule served in?

Traditionally, the Moscow mule is served in a copper mug.

Can you serve a Moscow mule in a regular glass?

You can use a regular highball glass if you don’t have a copper mug.

Are you supposed to chill Moscow mule mugs?

To keep the drink chilled longer, I suggest placing the mugs in a freezer for 10-15 minutes before making the drink.
